Crisis on the Frontier 4X01
Location: U.S.S. Endevour, Chief Science Officer's Office
Timeline: MD06 13:30hrs
Ema sat at her desk, a stack of PADDs to one side, a plate of half-eaten food on the other. It seemed that for the last few months, the Endevour had been without a proper department head for the sciences, and things had not been running smoothly with the absence. Now, Ema found herself with some housekeeping to do. Labs gone unused, staff left to their own devices... it was almost more than an administrator could bear. Luckily, Ema was a scientist first and a bureaucrat second.
In fact, she intended to leave as much of the bureaucracy as she could to the ship's Scientist's Mate. She had invited the chief petty officer, M'Kress to join her in her office to discuss the new departmental structure. Two minutes before their scheduled meeting time, the chime sounded from Ema's doorway and she stuffed one last bite of her lunch into her mouth.
"Come in," she called out, her speech slightly slurred as she chewed. As the doors parted, she stood up, swallowing the mostly-chewed bit of replicated biomatter.
Selorina entered the office. "You wanted to see me, ma'am?" She said standing in front of her Boss's desk.
"Thank you chief," Ema said and sat back down. "Please have a seat."
Selorina took the offered seat. "What is this about, ma'am?"
Ema smiled her friendliest smile. "I just thought we should have a chat," she said as she propped her elbows up on the desktop. "Honestly, I need your help."
"I'm I getting reassigned, ma'am?" Selorina asked trying not to let her unease show.
"Nothing so dire," Ema chuckled. "I'd like to see this department more active. We've got labs going unused, understaffed projects.... The way I see it, chief... the Nebula-class is a floating research platform. Even when the ship itself is deployed on tactical missions, we've got plenty of lab space to keep more than two dozen projects going on."
"We'll need more staff, ma'am." Selorina replied.
Ema snapped her fingers and pointed at the Caitian. "Exactly. We've got to have the staff to make that a reality. I'd like to get an influx of new faces in here. Can you get me a list of forty candidates to staff this department? We'll whittle it down to fifteen from there."
"I'll do what I can, ma'am." The Caitian happy to see that the department would get a new lease of life.
"Thank you," Ema said genuinely. "On a more personal note, Chief, what's your favorite food?"
"Its Chicken Carbonara, I developed a taste for it while on Earth." The Caitian said. "Why do you ask, Ma'am?"
Ema made a mental note of the chief's response and smiled back at her. "That sounds like a challenge," she said wryly. "We're going to be working closely together chief, you and I. So, we should get to know each other... I'd like to have you over for dinner sometime."
"I would like that, ma'am." Selorina said.
"So would I," Ema said and offered her warmest smile to the senior enlisted officer. "I'll get you the details as soon their finalized," she added.
"Now, chief, I'm new here and you've been aboard ship for a while. Tell me what we need and I will do my best to make it happen," Ema offered, leaning back comfortably in her chair.
"I know a few thing, but I'll make a complete list, ma'am and get back to you."
Ema stood up. "I appreciate that chief. I'll let you get back to work, if there's nothing else...."
